Shamanistic Practices: Grounding to Save Your Sanity


These days many people are walking around acting a little bit crazy. Especially in cities, people have become very disconnected from the earth and nature in general. I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase, “Energy flows where attention goes.” Well the main problem people have in the modern world is that they are ‘stuck in their head.’ Constant mind chatter. Thinking about what they’re going to consume next. Worrying about this and that. It’s all head stuff…

Getting back in touch with your body is a very healthy thing to do. With all the ‘psychic pollution’ bombarding us everyday, it’s a good idea to practice grounding exercises that ‘keep your feet firmly on the ground.’

One of the easiest exercises you can practice is to simply pay attention to your feet. Notice what they feel like at any moment. Try and hold your attention there for 90 seconds. There is a reason for this. It has been discovered that the brain hemispheres will balance out if you focus on a part of your body for at least 90 seconds. You will become free of left-brained stress and anxiety!

So practice doing this at regular intervals throughout the day.

A more advanced and worthwhile practice is that of visualising your root chakra grounding into the earths core. This Shamanic practice has been known about for thousands of years and I’m sure many moons ago we were all much more sorted and harmonious energetically.


The root chakra is located at the base of the spine. It is the first energy centre in the human body and relates to the physical energies. Traditionally this chakra has always been associated with the colour red. There’s various esotric reasonings for this. However I like the simple fact that red is the lowest frequency in the visible light spectrum.

Now what you want to do to ground your energies into the earth is practice the following visualisation:

Shamanic Grounding Practice

1. Imagine your root chakra emanating warm red light energy. This comes straight out of the base of your spine and genital region down into the core of the earth; which has a red energy centre.

2. Hold your attention on this energy. Red energy flowing out of your root chakra down into the earth’s core. You can sense the earths energy flowing up into your root chakra in an energy exchange.

* Personally I like to experience the energy as a pink quartz colour because this gives me more of a loving energy feeling from the earth. Test to find what works best for you.

OK, so if you’re new to this you might want to practice it a few times when you’ve got some peace and quiet. When you can get a sense of the root chakra connecting into the earth’s energies, it’s time to practice it out and about. Go for a walk and practice connecting into the earth’s core. Switch that red energy on and ground down into the earth. Practice it in different settings so you have true flexibility AND the ability to get grounded at will!

Taking it Further…

When you’ve got it down, you’ve empowered yourself with a really useful tool. Even when you’re surrounded by the insane worker bees in rush hour at the train station, you will be able to remain calm and in control. You can then take this further by learning to emanate love to these poor un-grounded sods.


You can do this by flowing the energy up from your root chakra to your heart and emanating it outwards in an aura of love. I suggest you first practice this in a medititive setting because it takes some practice to get the concentration needed to do this well.

So to clarify… First get grounded; flow the love energy up from the core of the earth. Send this up to your heart chakra and then imagine sending this red/pink loving energy out from your heart in all directions 360 degrees. Your heart energy is very powerful. You can imagine spreading that energy far and wide.
