Infobesity is a slang term for “information overload.” This refers to the experience people have when they’re overwhelmed with information, have difficulty understanding the issues at hand and struggle to make good decisions. Everyone suffers with this problem in the modern world but you can reduce the stress it causes by applying simple tactics…
1. Mind Mapping
If you’re feeling overwhelmed it’s because you have too many thoughts fluttering through your head. Mind Mapping is one of the best ways to get the ‘mind chatter’ out of your head and onto paper, so you can organise your thoughts better.
Simply start with a blank sheet of paper. Draw a circle in the middle and write ‘My Life.’ Now draw branches off with the different aspects of your life; Business, Relationships, Work, Health etc.
De-cluttering is an excellent exercise to do if you are feeling overwhelmed. Tidy up your desk. Remove all unnecessary things. Empty the bin. Do some dusting. Are there any books you can give away to charity?
Now de-clutter your computer. Remove any redundant files. Empty the trash. Set a new background image for the desktop.
This is one of my favourites. The Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) or energy tapping is easy to do and it works. Just do a few rounds of tapping on ‘feeling overwhelmed,’ or ‘information overload.’ Within a few minutes you will feel more in control with increased clarity of mind to make better decisions.
Lists are so simple and effective. Just use a pencil and paper. The process of making a list of ‘things to do’ becomes even easier when you have done a mind map first to help clarify your thoughts.
Try doing a list of things to do tomorrow before your go to bed. Redo the list in the morning and notice how your unconscious mind has processed more of the information while sleeping on it.
5. The Big Picture
Stress is caused by focussing in on a problematic aspect of something. Taking a moment to step back and see the big picture helps to put things in perspective and has a calming effect. Get comfortable in your chair. Breath deeply and imagine stepping out of your body… Float into space… Look at the beautiful earth with you down there somewhere! Can you see the stars and the milky way? Revel in that breathtaking view.
We’re being bombarded with more and more information. It’s up to us to take control and reduce our infobesity. By simplifying our life and using simple methods with daily discipline we can reduce information overload and save our sanity.
